Roberts Wins International Trademark Association’s Ladas Award
Professor Alexandra Roberts, a leading expert on intellectual property and trademark law, has been awarded the International Trademark Association’s Ladas Memorial Award in the professional category for her article, “A Poetics of Trademark Law,” forthcoming in the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. Roberts’ article calls upon several overlapping senses of the word “poetics”: a study of rhetorical devices, a strategy for interpretation, and a structuring principle undergirding trademark law itself. It defines a number of commonly used poetic devices, offers examples from both poetry and trademarks, and discusses federal court and USPTO decisions that consider their effects on protectability or infringement.

Swanson Tapped for Multiple Fellowships
Professor Kara Swanson, a leading authority on the intersections of intellectual property, gender and sexuality, and the history of science and technology, has been selected for three fellowships during 2023–2024. Most of her time will be spent working on her forthcoming book, Inventing Citizens: Race, Gender, and the US Patent System.

First off, Swanson is spending the summer as the Linda Hall Library Fellow, doing archival research and participating in the life of the acclaimed library in Kansas City, Missouri, considered a leading repository of material on science and technology. When she’s not in Kansas anymore, she’ll make her way down under to the land of the kiwis. There, she’ll be the Don Trow Visiting Fellow at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington in January 2024. While in residence, she will interact with students and faculty and participate in an international workshop on intellectual property and gender that will result in an edited volume on the topic. In late spring 2024, she’ll be the Raquel and Arthur Seidel Senior Fellow in the History of Intellectual Property and Patents at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia, investigating the lives of immigrant inventors in the collections of the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry.

Professor Claudia Haupt’s Scholarship is Cited by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals
The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has cited Professor Claudia Haupt’s scholarship in Brokamp v. James, a recent case involving a First Amendment challenge to professional licensing in the telemedicine/online mental health counseling context. In “Licensing Knowledge,” 72 Vanderbilt Law Review 501 (2019), Haupt provides a theoretical framework to reconcile professional speech protection with professional licensing and concludes the First Amendment is a “poor vehicle to challenge professional licensing regimes.“

Professor Alexandra Roberts Named Senior Fellow—Trademarks at GMU’s CIP2
Professor Alexandra Roberts, a leading expert on intellectual property and social media, has been named a Senior Fellow for Trademarks at the George Mason University Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy (C-IP2). CIP2 produces research, education and service at the intersection of IP and innovation policy to better understand and shape the means of innovation as a positive force for good. During her fellowship, Roberts will collaborate with center leadership on strategic plans, help identify law and policy questions for research and writing projects, and assist with planning and executing IP programming, with a focus on current issues in trademark law.
