ALWD Event: “Be Your Own Best Advocate”

Interactive Panel for Legal Writing Directors and Individuals with Administrative Responsibility
April 27, 2022 | 1:30-3:00PM ET | Zoom

The ALWD Leadership & Development Committee is proud to host a VFP geared towards legal writing directors or those with administrative responsibility. The theme of the panel is how individuals can be their best own advocates. For a director, or someone with administrative responsibility, being one’s own best advocate must be balanced with advocacy for a program. Topics to be discussed include gender dynamics relating to self-advocacy, the changing and challenging demands of a COVID environment, tensions between individual career and personal goals and departmental/programmatic/institutional goals, salary and scholarship considerations, and fostering mental health in self, department faculty and staff and students.

Panelists:
Heidi Brown
Director of Legal Writing and Professor of Law, Brooklyn Law School

Shakira Pleasant
Assistant Professor of Law; Director, Legal Writing Resource Center, University of Illinois Chicago Law School

Kathy Vinson
Professor of Legal Writing and Director of Legal Writing, Research, and Written Advocacy, Suffolk University Law School

Their insight will be followed by smaller group dialogue sessions.
