Unpacking the US positioning on Greenland and the international legal and human rights implications with legal experts from Denmark and Greenland

Join us for an online conversation with Danish lawyer and renowned human rights expert, Morten Kjaerum, and Greenland lawyer Aviaja Helms. They will help us unpack the Trump administration’s statements on Greenland from the perspective of human rights and international law. In this informal session, Professor Kjaerum and Ms. Helms will take questions and plan to discuss the history and nature of Greenland’s unique status and relationship to Denmark, the role of the EU and perceptions in Europe of the positioning of the new US administration through the lens of human rights and international law.

This meeting is co-hosted by the Human Rights Center and International Law Society at the University of Minnesota Law School and the Center for Global Law and Justice at Northeastern University School of Law.

Professor Morten Kjaerum is an adjunct professor at Aalborg University, Denmark, and an affiliated professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lund University in Sweden. Morten was the Director of RWI from 2015-2024, the first Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights in Vienna, Austria 2008 to 2015, and the Director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) from 1991-2008. Professor Kjaerum has also served in several roles with the United Nations, including as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) (2002-2008); a member of the UN Voluntary Fund for Technical Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights; and a member of the Voluntary Fund for Financial and Technical Assistance in the Implementation of the Universal Periodic Review.

Professor Kjaerum will be joined by his colleague Aviaja Helms, a lawyer based in Greenland.
