DESCRIPTION:Matthews Distinguished University Professor of Law Wendy Parmet has been a transformative force at Northeastern University School of Law for more than four decades\, helping to define the field of public health law while inspiring generations of students\, scholars and colleagues. A brilliant scholar\, prolific author\, gifted teacher and generous mentor\, Professor Parmet has brought extraordinary intellectual rigor and humanity to her work at the intersection of law\, health and society. Her scholarship has shaped national conversations on public health\, health law\, disability\, bioethics and civil rights\, establishing her as one of the nation’s foremost public health law scholars. \nProfessor Parmet’s influence extends from the classroom to the courtroom. In 1998\, she served as co-counsel in Bragdon v. Abbott\, a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court affirming protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act for people living with HIV. In Finch v. Commonwealth Connector Authority\, she was lead counsel with Health Law Advocates in a case that established that legal immigrants in Massachusetts had a constitutional right to same state-supported healthcare as citizens. Her books\, including the seminal Populations\, Public Health\, and the Law and Constitutional Contagion: COVID\, the Courts\, and Public Health\, have likewise made lasting contributions to the field. \nProfessor Parmet is founder and current faculty co-director of Northeastern Law’s Center for Health Policy and Law. Through the center\, her scholarship and her extraordinary commitment to teaching and mentorship\, she has built institutions\, advanced the field and influenced generations of lawyers\, judges and scholars. \nAs Professor Parmet steps into retirement\, the Northeastern Law community celebrates a remarkable career and legacy. SUMMARY:International Law and Artificial Intelligence Series: Guest Lecture by Mary Ellen O’Connell
DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for Global Law and Justice for a lecture by Mary Ellen O’Connell as part of the International Law and Artificial Intelligence Series. \nMary Ellen O’Connell is the Robert and Marion Short Professor of Law and Professor of International Peace Studies—Kroc Institute at the University of Notre Dame. Her work is in the areas of international law on the use of force\, international dispute resolution\, and international legal theory. She is the author or editor of numerous books\, including\, most recently\, The Art of Law in the International Community (Cambridge University Press\, May 2019; paperback 2020) and Self-Defence Against Non-State Actors (with Tams and Tladi\, Cambridge University Press\, July 2019). \nIn 2020\, Professor O’Connell was scheduled to be Distinguished Visiting Academic\, University of St Andrews\, Institute of Legal and Constitutional Research. In fall 2018\, she was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School and in the spring was a Fulbright Fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. In April 2018\, she presented the Fifth Annual Justice Stephen Breyer International Law Lecture at the Brookings Institution\, titled\, Autonomous Weapons and International Law. From 2010-2012\, she was a vice president of the American Society of International Law and from 2005 to 2010 chaired the International Law Association Committee on the Use of Force. Professor O’Connell served as a Title X professional military educator for the U.S. Department of Defense in Germany and was also an associate attorney in private practice with the international law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington\, D.C. She holds an MSc from LSE\, an LLB and PhD from Cambridge\, and a JD from Columbia.
