Northeastern Law Hosts 16th Annual Women in the Law Conference

05.06.24 — Never has the power of the media been more evident — with fake news popping up by the second, polarized news channels and public TV and radio under fire — it’s absolutely vital to find reputable news sources. This year’s Brown Forum for Women in the Law Conference focused on women, media and the law with an eye to upcoming elections on every level and a lens on issues critical to women’s health and to voters. Graduates and friends from across the country joined us on Friday, May 3, and enjoyed a day of dynamic presentations, panels and networking.

Program highlights included: special presentations by Juliette Kayyem, a media commentator, Pulitzer Prize finalist and senior lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School, and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, one of the nation’s most prominent leaders in ensuring elections are secure and accessible; an intimate interview with Sunu Chandy ’98, senior advisor with Democracy Forward and author of a poetry collection, My Dear Comrades (Regal House, 2023); a panel on voting rights, election laws, money in politics, ethics, voter suppression, redistricting, the rule of law and fair democracy for all people.

We thank our wonderful speakers and presenters, our conference co-chairs Amy Carlin ’00, Umi Grigsby ’15 and Geri Haight ’97, and our conference advisory group, whose collective, year-long input and effort helped us bring the conference from conception to fruition: Professor Emerita Judy Brown, Vanessa Candela ’00, Amy Carlin ’00, Kelly Douglas ’92, S. Mayumi “Umi” Grigsby ’15, Kathy Henry ’00, Sofia Lingos ’09, Karen O’Malley ’94, Lili Palacios-Baldwin’98, Gina Perini ’01, Mala Rafik ’97 and Juliana Spofford ’89
