Northeastern Law Launches JD x Certificate in Legal Design

09.06.22 — To meet the need for creative and technologically savvy lawyers, Northeastern Law is launching the JD x Graduate Certificate in Legal Design — an interdisciplinary certificate program that encompasses courses and experiences that will provide JD students with opportunities for in-depth study and practice of legal design and its application in specific contexts, positioning them for the increasing number of postgraduate jobs in the field.

An undisputed leader in the field of legal design, Northeastern Law founded NuLawLab, the first staffed legal design lab at a U.S. law school, in 2013 to create new strategies of legal agency through engagement with the fields of art and design. Training provided through the JD x Graduate Certificate in Legal Design, including coursework, a legal design co-op and a practical legal design capstone project or paper, will prepare students to expertly apply legal design methods as innovation in the legal profession accelerates. Examples of recent NuLawLab innovations include apps to help women veterans obtain the legal services they deserve, a one-of-a-kind virtual tour of a Colorado courtroom that helps demystify the legal labyrinth for litigants, and founding a coalition to provide technological and personal support for those facing the housing crisis in East Boston.

“We are excited to be launching this certificate at Northeastern Law, which is the culmination of many years of hard work building the emerging field of legal design. This certificate will give Northeastern graduates the tools and experience to drive rapidly-accelerating change in the legal profession and among our legal institutions.” said Dan Jackson ’97, executive director of NuLawLab.
