Northeastern Law Receives Top Rankings for Legal Technology, Women in Leadership, Health Law and Human Rights
09.13.24 — In recognition of its national leadership in preparing students for lawyering, Northeastern University School of Law received several top rankings in the 2024 “back to school” issue of preLaw magazine.
Top Schools for Legal Technology
Rank: A-
According to the magazine, the top law schools “are preparing students like never before, developing curricula to address the latest in technology and teaching students how to use it to solve real-world legal problems.” The magazine article features Northeastern University School of Law’s NuLawLab, which recently joined forces with several groups in creating the Boston Housing Support Station, which offers pop-up computer and internet stations with volunteers to help users access justice through technology. The first station, located in East Boston, provides guided interviews developed by the NuLawLab and Greater Boston Legal Services to help tenants defend themselves against eviction and provides access to rent relief applications. It also provides access to remote human helpers drawn from the school’s Housing Law course. “We learned early on that not everyone has access to internet, printers and computer terminals that would allow them to access the online forms,” Dan Jackson ’97, executive director of NuLawLab, told preLaw. “There is a digital divide in this nation.”
Top Schools for Women in Leadership
Rank: A+ and #11
In this inaugural ranking, preLaw highlights “law schools committed to fostering women in leadership, showcasing their efforts to create inclusive and supportive environments.” At Northeastern Law, women have long held a variety of top leadership positions. For 2024–2025, the Student Bar Association president is a woman; Northeastern University Law Review’s editor-in-chief is a woman and 11 women serve on the journal in executive positions. Generally, women comprise approximately 70 percent of the student body.
Top Schools for Health Law
Rank: A+
Northeastern Law is renowned for its Center for Health Policy and Law; The Action Lab at the Center for Health Policy and Law; and Public Health Advocacy Institute. According to preLaw, “Northeastern University School of Law’s Public Health Advocacy Institute, which oversees the Public Health Legal Clinic, has been busy this past year. The institute is taking the lead in developing a public health approach to gambling addiction and was part of a feature story on CBS News’ ‘60 Minutes.’ The institute filed a class-action lawsuit in Massachusetts against DraftKings, alleging that the sports betting company used misleading sign-up bonuses to deceive plaintiffs. It has also been working with Congressman Paul Tonko of New York on the SAFE Bet Act. The bill, which Tonko is preparing to introduce to Congress, would require sports betting companies to perform affordability checks on their customers and ban sports betting ads during live sporting.
Top Schools for Human Rights
Rank: A+
This fall, the law school is launching the Center for Global Law and Justice. It builds on the outstanding work of the Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (PHRGE); Program on the Corporation, Law and Global Society; and the International Social and Economic Rights Project (iSERP). It focuses on global injustice and diverse forms of inequality and subordination through our commitments to promoting human rights, humanitarianism, climate justice, fair governance and democracy. As one of its first initiatives, the Center for Global Law and Justice is launching a collaborative project to engage with the City of Boston on integrating human rights into its smart city initiatives.
