05.14.26 — At a moment when the stakes for public interest law could not be higher, Northeastern Law’s Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration (CPIAC) has named Amy Romero as its 2026–2027 Visiting Fellow. The CPIAC Visiting Fellowship is designed to bring accomplished advocates to the Northeastern community to contribute to academic life by sharing their expertise through meetings with students, faculty and staff, and by participating in events, classes and discussions. The program is primarily virtual, with select in-person engagements.
“This fellowship celebrates and recognizes dedicated public interest advocates,” said Renay Frankel, managing director of the Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration. “We are excited for Amy Romero to share her exceptional knowledge and experience in public service with the Northeastern community.”
Romero brings to the role a career defined by frontline advocacy and a deep commitment to her home state of Rhode Island. She currently serves as chief legal counsel for the Lawyers’ Committee for Rhode Island (LCRI), a newly formed nonprofit providing pro bono rapid response to federal government overreach affecting individuals and nonprofits across the state.
Prior to joining LCRI, Romero served as an assistant US attorney in Rhode Island from 2016 to 2025, where her work focused on civil rights litigation and community outreach. Her career in public interest law spans decades and a wide range of settings: she has worked as a staff attorney at Rhode Island Legal Services and Community Legal Aid, clerked for the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, served as director of the Domestic Violence Court at Rhode Island Family Court, and worked as an advocate at the Domestic Violence Resource Center for South County. In 2025–2026, she was selected as a Northeastern University Law and Policy Fellow.
“As history has continued to show us, and as we are seeing more than ever today, social justice movements don’t happen without public interest lawyers — and of course the law schools that train them,” said Romero. “Northeastern Law is one of the top public interest law schools in the country, and I could not be more thrilled to partner with the faculty, staff and students as the Center for Public Interest and Advocacy Visiting Fellow.”
