Professsor Margaret Burnham Receives the National Consortium’s Equity Award

04.29.25—Professor Margaret Burnham was honored in April with the prestigious Equity Award by the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts at its annual conference, held virtually over Zoom, where she also served as a keynote speaker.
Established in 2017, the Equity Award recognizes individuals who have made distinguished lifetime contributions or exceptional efforts to advance equal access and fair treatment in the court system. Previous recipients include Dr. Yolande Marlow (2018), Public Defender Jeff Adachi (2019), Judges Nelson and Puig-Lugo (2021), Hon. Edwina G. Richardson-Mendelson and the Center for Death Penalty Litigation (2022), Mavis Nimoh (2023) and Justice Anita Earls of the North Carolina Supreme Court (2024).
An internationally recognized expert on civil and human rights, comparative constitutional rights and international criminal law, Burnham serves as faculty co-director of Northeastern Law’s Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR) and founded and directs the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project, which investigates racial violence during the Jim Crow era and other historical injustices. In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed her to the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board. Her acclaimed book, By Hands Now Known: Jim Crow’s Legal Executioners (W.W. Norton, 2022), has received numerous honors.
