Rachel Garcia ’21 Awarded EY Young Tax Professional Scholarship

11.02.20 — Rachel Garcia ’21 has been named as a runner-up in the 2020 Ernst & Young (EY) US Young Tax Professional of the Year (YTPY) competition, part of an international competition that identifies and rewards the next generation of leaders in business, tax, law and technology. Garcia was among only 10 finalists chosen from a pool of more than 400 US YTPY applicants on the strength of a five-minute video she prepared on an international tax-based case study. For her stellar performance as a runner-up, Garcia will receive a scholarship.

In preparation for the US final, Garcia collaborated with EY professionals to expand her video case study. During a 20-minute live presentation, she made the case for EY’s client to expand its operations to China and described the type of business structure that would be most beneficial for the company in light of US and Chinese tax law. “I was thrilled to be able to work with so many EY tax professionals and really dive in and challenge myself with this complex tax research project,” said Garcia.

“I am proud of Rachel’s accomplishment in this tough competition,” said Professor Blaine Saito, an expert in the field of taxation. “It shows the high caliber of our students here at NUSL.”

The Young Tax Professional of the Year (YTPY) competition gives students a special opportunity to showcase a range of tax, legal and general business knowledge as well as analytical and presentation skills in a multi-step, case-study challenge. The first step is the US competition. The US winner advances to the global level, where she or he networks and competes with other high performers from more than 20 countries around the world.
