Mayumi Grigsby

07.30.20 — S. Mayumi “Umi” Grigsby ’15 is the author of a new book, Empowered: Reforming a Dismissive Health Care System (New Degree Press, 2020), that addresses the dangerous impact negative interactions with healthcare providers and the healthcare system can have on black women and their health. Empowered is a non-fiction book that speaks to women and specifically black women and other marginalized individuals who are looking at navigating an often dismissive healthcare system and want to fight back and feel empowered.

I wrote this book because after doctors dismissed my pain for years, I diagnosed myself with what should have been an easily identifiable and treated illness,” said Grigsby, who serves as chief of policy and advocacy at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Chicago. “Although my story had a happy ending, I wondered if other women who looked like me had been treated the same way. They had. Now I am sharing my story and theirs and hope that this will lead to better outcomes for others.”

Grigsby has launched a 30-day pre-sale campaign for her book, which will be published by New Degree Press in December 2020. To pre-order a copy of Empowered: Reforming a Dismissive Health Care System, visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/empowered-by-s-mayumi-grigsby#/
