Northeastern Law Faculty at the AALS Annual Meeting

01.03.24 — Northeastern Law is well represented at the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting, which kicks off today at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC. Professors Kristin Madison, David Simon and Margaret Woo will serve as panelists and Professor Jeremy Paul, long-time editor of the Journal of Legal Education, will be recognized for his tireless efforts to improve the quality of articles and broaden the topics covered in the journal on behalf of AALS. In recognition of her innovative contributions to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the legal academy and the legal profession more broadly, Professor Libby Adler ’94 will be presented with the LGBTQ+ Inclusive Excellence Institutional Award.

Under the theme “Defending Democracy,” the program will explore the role law educators must play in defending our nation against real and persistent threats to democracy in America. With hundreds of sessions for legal scholars, educators and administrators, this is the largest gathering of law faculty in the world.

Faculty Honors

The Section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues (SOGII) will present Professor Libby Adler ’94 with the 2023 LGBTQ+ Inclusive Excellence Institutional Award at a ceremony following the section’s main program on Friday, January 5. This award recognizes innovative contributions to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the legal academy and the legal profession more broadly. Adler was singled out for her efforts to advance the inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons in both the legal academy and the legal profession.

Each year, SOGII names two LGBTQ+ Inclusive Excellence Award recipients, one an individual and one an institution/program. In 2022, Northeastern Law received the institutional award for its “long legacy of inclusion, expanding access and breaking barriers as well as its well-deserved reputation as the premiere training ground for LGBTQ+ law students who enter practice and change the world for LGBTQ+ people.”

Professor Jeremy Paul will be recognized for Northeastern Law’s co-leadership of the Journal of Legal Education, which ended this summer after more than nine years of service.  “Promoting creative and rigorous law teaching and research is more important today that at any time in my career,” said Paul. “It has been an honor to benefit from steadfast support and a shared sense of mission with AALS, productive collaboration with colleagues at American University and [prior co-host] University of Washington, and inspired leadership from co-editors Margaret Woo and Sonia Rolland. It has been a team effort including faculty, librarians and staff from day one here at Northeastern Law and we are proud to have had the opportunity to be part of the JLE’s longstanding service to our profession.”
