Baker ’05 Appointed to Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board
12.17.19 — Governor Charlie Baker has appointed Professor Shalanda Baker ’05 to the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB), an independent state board that reviews proposed large energy facilities, including power plants, electric transmission lines, intra-state natural gas pipelines and natural gas storage tanks. To obtain EFSB approval, a proposed facility must demonstrate that it would provide a reliable energy supply, with a minimum impact on the environment, at the lowest possible cost. The Department of Public Utilities administratively supports the work of the EFSB and its staff, but the nine-member EFSB makes its decisions independently.
Baker, an expert in the fields of environmental law and energy law, recently co-founded the Initiative for Energy Justice, which provides city and state policymakers with concrete energy policy frameworks and best-practice tools that foreground equity in the transition to 100 percent renewable energy and contributes to a bottom-up movement of energy justice, originating in frontline communities, by arming movement and base-building organizations in the environmental, racial and economic justice spaces with well-supported policy research and workable transactional models for operationalizing a just transition to 100 percent renewable energy.
