Catherine Lizotte Joins Northeastern Law as Associate Teaching Professor

06.23.23 —Northeastern Law is pleased to announce that Catherine Lizotte will join the university faculty effective July 1, 2023, as associate teaching professor in the Legal Skills in Social Context program. Lizotte joins Northeastern with 10 years of experience teaching legal research and writing and over a dozen years of experience as a local government law practitioner. Most recently, she was a faculty member at Boston University School of Law, teaching in the first-year lawyering program.

Previously, Lizotte served as counsel to the City of Boston for 14 years, first as assistant corporation counsel in the Government Services Division of the City of Boston Law Department, representing the city in diverse cases including election law claims, land use disputes, First Amendment claims and constitutional challenges to city ordinances. She subsequently served as legal advisor to the Boston Public Schools, leading the district’s in-house legal office and advising the superintendent and school committee on district operations and policy. Lizotte credits her years in public service with helping her gain a deeper understanding of the systemic barriers facing underserved urban communities and fueling her belief that local governments are well positioned to address inequities by directly engaging their communities and developing innovative and inclusive policies.

Lizotte earned her BA in sociology from Saint Anselm College and her JD from Suffolk University Law School. After law school, she clerked for the justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court.

“Educating law students on the role lawyers play in addressing inequities is crucial,” said Lizotte. “Northeastern is unique in its commitment to teaching lawyering skills through a social justice lens and I am excited to help my LSSC students utilize these skills in partnering with organizations that are working for change at the grassroots level. I am thrilled to join Northeastern Law’s community of accomplished students and faculty who are committed to integrating social justice values into their work.”
