CLEAR Announces Probate and Family Diversity Fellowship Recipients

06.25.23 — Northeastern Law’s Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR) Probate and Family Diversity Fellowship program has announced that Shreya Vijay ’23, Jennifer Gonzalez ’24 and Pavithra Venkataraman ’25 will receive fellowships to work with judges of the Massachusetts Suffolk County Probate and Family Court, as well as observe the work of the Suffolk County Juvenile Court and the Administrative Office of the Probate and Family Court.

“This fellowship is intended to increase diversity in the Probate and Family Court by providing opportunities for underrepresented students to gain experience in these areas of law and is funded by a graduate who has long practiced in this area,” said Professor Deborah Ramirez, co-director of CLEAR.

The fellowship includes observing cases in court, legal research and assisting the court in drafting and editing. The students work primarily with Associate Justice Janine D. Rivers in Suffolk County and have the opportunity to work with other judges of that court, as well as the First Justice of the Suffolk County Juvenile Court Helen A. Brown Bryant and the Chief Justice of the Probate and Family Court John D. Casey.

The Massachusetts Probate and Family Court has jurisdiction over family-related and probate matters, such as divorce, paternity, child support, custody, parenting time, adoption, termination of parental rights, and abuse prevention. The court also has general equity jurisdiction and handles wills, estates, trusts, guardianships and conservatorships.
