CLEAR Hosts Judge Reginald C. Lindsay Fellows

07.25.24 – On July 3, 2024, Northeastern University School of Law’s Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR) hosted the 2025 cohort of Judge Reginald C. Lindsay Fellows, eight college students from institutions across the country who were selected for the prestigious nine-week summer internship established in 2014 to honor the late Judge Reginald C. Lindsay. Nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts in 1993, Judge Lindsay served until 2008 and died in Boston on March 12, 2009.

The students, who intern at the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, are assigned as interns to the US Attorney’s Office, the US Probation and Pretrial Services Office or Federal Public Defender Office. They meet with judges, court personnel, community leaders, visit different law schools and participate in various community service activities. They also participate in courses that focus on legal research and writing.

At Northeastern, they met with Professor Deborah Ramirez, CLEAR’s faculty co-director and director of Northeastern Law’s Criminal Justice Task Force, and other CLEAR team members. The visit was an opportunity for the fellows to learn more about graduate student life and academic support available within the Northeastern Law community. Participants included Bahar Abbassy (Tufts University ’25), Enely Alvarez (Amherst College ’24), Xavier Aparicio (UMASS Amherst ’25), Gabrielle Baker (Union College ’25),  Lesley Gomez (Simmons University ’24), Astrid Hernandez (Bridgewater State University ’25), Brian Leon (Centre College ’24) and Chris Wong (UMASS Amherst ’25), who were accompanied by Fellowship Coordinators Jurianny Guerrero (Centre College ’26) and Anna Zhao (Yale University ’25).

At the end of the program, fellows take part in a moot court competition, which is argued before a federal judge.

About the Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR)

Worldwide, recent attention on the role of law and legal systems in creating and perpetuating seemingly intractable racial inequalities and disparities provide an opportunity to create real change. At Northeastern Law, the Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR) brings together our pioneering programs and faculty — long engaged in theoretical and translational research, innovative pedagogy and collaborations with external communities — to address today’s challenges and provide tomorrow’s solutions for the nation’s most complex social challenges. As one of the law school’s five Centers of Excellence, CLEAR offers an interdisciplinary convening space for faculty and students across the university who want to have an impact on these issues.

Two dynamic programs are at the core of the CLEAR’s work: the nationally recognized Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ), led by Professor Margaret Burnham, and the highly regarded Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF), led by Professor Deborah Ramirez. These projects have a common goal—building from historical memory and working to address the racial injuries of the past through the use of law, teaching, techniques of restorative justice and community partnerships. Both share a methodological focus on law as it intersects with history and other disciplines, resulting in deeply interdisciplinary investigations of race, law and justice.
