CLEAR Reports on Black Land Loss, Recommends Strategies to Mitigate Loss and Preserve Land for Future Generations
11.01.2024 — Northeastern Law’s Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR) has released a new report on the multifaceted challenges surrounding Black land loss, including its impact on building generational wealth within Black communities. Through analyses, expert insights and real-life examples, the report empowers readers with the strategies and tools to make a meaningful impact and preserve land for future generations.
“The struggle to retain and promote Black land ownership is ongoing, and we are pleased to make this resource available,” said Dr. Deborah Jackson, managing director of CLEAR. “We look forward to continuing to contribute to the work being done in this area,”
Following an event hosted by CLEAR in December 2023—which featured a panel of practitioners and scholars working on issues of Black land loss, land retention and the cultivation of generational wealth—this report is the culmination of a collaboration between these groups and CLEAR colleagues. It explores contributing factors and a matrix of events, including the experiences of Black farmers, the impact of federal, state and local government policies related to eminent domain, zoning, housing and property laws.
