Dan Brophy ’25 Awarded Equal Justice Works Fellowship to Defend Voting Rights

05.23.2025 —Dan Brophy ’25 has been awarded an Equal Justice Works (EJW) Fellowship, one of the most prestigious and competitive post-graduate legal fellowships in the country. Brophy is among only 60 fellows selected for the 2025 program, which pairs aspiring public interest lawyers with legal services organizations so that they can work on a two-year project of their own design.

Brophy will spend his fellowship at Campaign Legal Center (CLC) in Washington, DC, defending the voting rights of naturalized citizens and language minority citizens amidst voter suppression attempts purportedly pursued under the false pretense of preventing non-US citizens from voting. Working in states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia—where legislation and administrative actions increasingly threaten to disenfranchise naturalized and language-minority voters—Brophy’s project will combine legislative and administrative advocacy, community empowerment and public education, and strategic litigation. He will partner with local communities to increase awareness of voting rights, identify suppression tactics and elevate those concerns for advocacy and legal response with local and national partners. In addition to empowering voters directly, he will lead public education efforts to challenge misinformation around noncitizen voting and promote accurate narratives grounded in fact and law. His work will also include litigation to protect access to the ballot box by challenging laws and policies that unlawfully burden or deny the right to vote.

This fellowship builds on Brophy’s longstanding commitment to voting rights and equitable civic participation.

“Naturalized citizens and language minority citizens deserve to participate in democracy, and this project will combat vile attempts to exclude these communities from elections and civic life,” said Brophy, who completed a co-op at CLC in summer 2024. “I am grateful that EJW recognizes the need to defend the voting rights of vulnerable communities, especially in this moment in time.”
