David Simon Joins Northeastern Law Faculty as Associate Professor of Law

1.17.23 —Northeastern Law is pleased to announce that David Simon, an expert on intellectual property, healthcare law, data and privacy will join the Northeastern University community on July 1, 2023, as associate professor of law. Simon is currently a lecturer on law and a research fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School, where he teaches a course on drug and device innovation and leads a three-year initiative dubbed Diagnosing in the Home: The Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Challenges and Opportunities of Digital Home Health. He was previously the Frank H. Marks Intellectual Property Law Fellow at George Washington University School of Law and a visiting assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, where he taught a variety of courses.

“We are delighted to welcome David Simon to the Northeastern community,” said Dean James Hackney. “His expertise in healthcare law, policy and ethics is a perfect match with our Center for Health Policy and Law and our Center for Law, Information and Creativity. We know he will enrich our discourse and provide valuable research and teaching that contribute to our understanding of how we can improve the quality of health for all.”

Simon is no stranger to Northeastern. In the fall of 2021, he taught Tort Law to first-year students. His research focuses on the innovation in healthcare, with a focus on prescription drugs and devices: he has written on topics including liability issues for hospital-at-home programs, data sharing and ownership, and unapproved uses of drugs and devices. His current projects include developing a new theory of liability for prescription drug manufacturers and designing systems to support research for ultra-rare diseases and conditions. He also has written a substantial body of scholarship on intellectual property law.

“After teaching at Northeastern in the fall of 2021, I knew it was where I wanted to be. It has everything one could ask for,” said Simon. “In addition to the wonderful students, faculty and staff, Northeastern Law also has a nationally recognized health law faculty and a public-oriented mission built into its DNA. I’m elated to be able to join and contribute to Northeastern’s thriving community.”
