Bio

Alan Chow teaches Transactional Drafting at Northeastern Law. He is an experienced trademark prosecution attorney with over a decade of experience with advising and assisting companies in a wide range of industries on developing and managing their trademark portfolios. Professor Chow’s experience includes prosecuting over a thousand trademark applications with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), filing applications to seek worldwide registration of marks through the Madrid Protocol (i.e. through the World Intellectual Property Office) and engaging with foreign counsel to register marks in over fifty countries. He is admitted to practice law with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which permits the USPTO to allow him to prosecute trademark applications on behalf of companies throughout the United States and its territories.

Professor Chow’s services include conducting clearance searches to determine the risks and registrability of marks, developing strategies to avoid conflict with exiting registrations owned by third-parties, overcoming substantive refusals to trademark applications by USPTO and foreign trademark offices, maintaining registered marks with the USPTO and foreign trademark offices and enforcement of a company’s trademark rights against third parties. His services also include niche solutions, such as, clearing the title of registered trademarks owned by sister companies, resolving issues relating to a corporate structure, and establishing holding companies to share ownership of marks.

While working as an associate attorney at Arent Fox, Professor Chow’s responsibilities included conducting trademark clearance searches for one of the world’s top retailers and maintaining the existing trademark practices for its Boston office. During COVID, he started his own practice and continued to manage a small client portfolio that followed him from Arent Fox. His existing client portfolio includes entertainers, cleaning product manufacturers, tech products, mobile app startups and small retailers.
