Christine Stoneman began her legal career as a fellow at Legal Action of Wisconsin and has worked with public service organizations ever since. Until May of 2025, she was a chief in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Coordination and Compliance Section. During her 25 years in the Civil Rights Division, Professor Stoneman led nationwide efforts to ensure consistent and effective enforcement of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related statutes and executive orders that, cumulatively, prohibited race, color, national origin (including limited English proficiency), religion, and sex discrimination.

After leaving the Department of Justice, Professor Stoneman joined the Northeastern University as a Law and Policy Fellow for 2025–2026, during which time she taught and wrote about environmental justice and Title VI and mentored Northeastern students. In 2026, she founded Stoneman Insights, a consultancy focused on strengthening nonprofits and public service, and on advancing and applying civil rights principles. Early in her career, Professor Stoneman worked at the Center for Law and Education and as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable John W. Reynolds.
