Geneid ’23 Awarded Massachusetts Bar Foundation Legal Intern Fellowship

geneid-shahinaz-15005.27.21 — Shahinaz Geneid ’23 has been selected to receive the competitive Massachusetts Bar Foundation (MBF) Legal Intern Fellowship. Geneid will spend her fellowship working at Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS), splitting her time between the Employment Law Unit and the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinic (HIRC), working on their Immigration and Human Rights Project.

The MBF’s Legal Intern Fellowship Program, which is funded by the MBF Fellows Fund and the Smith Family Fund, supports law students pursuing careers in the public interest law sector by offering fellowships to students providing civil legal services through nonprofit legal aid organizations to low-income clients in Massachusetts.

One of only five students in the state selected for the 2021 MBF program, Geneid will be engaged in a combination of direct legal aid and policy work across the employment and labor law and immigration law fields – both providing direct legal aid to clients in need of pro-bono legal services, such as assistance in filing for unemployment, as well as translating the lessons learned from GBLS’s work with such clients to inform policy briefs and larger scale advocacy for workers’ rights and immigrant rights on the state and national levels.

“As a student of Northeastern’s JD-PhD program, I am focusing on international human rights law and policy, particularly within the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) regions and amongst their diaspora communities,” said Geneid.  “As such, I’m honored to support GBLS in providing Arabic-language services to members of the diaspora this Summer, and eager to learn from experienced legal aid providers how best to advocate for members of historically marginalized communities at the individual level through direct service as well as the systemic level through policy and legislative work.”.
