08.30.2025 — Professor Claudia E. Haupt, a nationally recognized expert on First Amendment law whose current work is situated at the intersection of free speech, health and technology, has been named faculty co-director of Northeastern Law’s Center for Health Policy and Law (CHPL). The center promotes innovative solutions to public health challenges at home and around the globe through cutting-edge research, policy analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration.

“I’m excited to have Claudia join me in leading the center,” said Professor Wendy E. Parmet, a nationally recognized expert on public health who has served as faculty director of CHPL since its launch in 2012 and will continue to serve as faculty co-director. “Her expertise in the intersections between health law and the First Amendment is unmatched and I know that she will bring energy and a passion for health law to our mission.”

Haupt has published extensively on professional speech and has emerged as a prominent voice on the role of artificial intelligence in professional advice-giving. Her recent publications in the Journal of the American Medical Association have examined AI-generated medical advice, health privacy challenges, and FTC regulation of AI-generated medical disinformation. Her work has been cited by the World Health Organization in its guidance on artificial intelligence ethics and governance. She has presented her research at prestigious venues including Yale Law School, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Oxford, addressing audiences of legal scholars, medical professionals and policymakers about the implications of AI for healthcare delivery and regulation. Her second book, Professional Speech, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press, explores questions surrounding professional advice-giving, including the role of generative AI in healthcare.

Haupt and Parmet have established a strong collaborative partnership, co-authoring several articles, including  “Public Health Originalism and the First Amendment,” in the Washington & Lee Law Review “Lethal Lies: Government Speech, Distorted Science, and the First Amendment,” in the University of Illinois Law Review  and “Holding Clinicians in Public Office Accountable to Professional Standards,” in the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics.

“I am delighted to take on this role with the Center for Health Policy and Law as faculty co-director,” said Haupt, who recently returned to the Northeastern campus after a sabbatical visit at the Institute of European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford. “I look forward to working alongside Wendy, whose vision and leadership have made the center a leader in the field, and whose generosity as a colleague and collaborator I have deeply appreciated over the years. I look forward to building on the center’s strong foundation and I’m excited for the opportunities ahead to collaborate both with Northeastern Law’s outstanding health law faculty and across campus to further the center’s impact.”
