02.24.21 — Technology Law Scholar Evan Jones ’21, has been awarded first place in the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA) Writing Competition for his paper, Reckoning Patents as Public Franchise.” The competition awards papers that contribute to knowledge of intellectual property law and engage the creative thought process.

Jones began the paper as a 2L student in Professor Kara Swanson's patent law class and worked on it in subsequent terms. His paper argues that patents, after being characterized as public franchises by the Supreme Court, should now afford stronger property rights to patent owners.

“The topic of this paper was inspired during a co-op. I substantially developed the draft for Professor Swanson’s Patent Law course. Professor Claire DeMarco helped me polish the final version,” says Jones. “This award is the direct product of the Northeastern Law experience.”

Joins joins several other Northeastern Law students who have been awarded prizes in the annual BPLA competition:
Maya Fe Holzhauer ’18 (second place, 2017)
John Carl Zwisler ’16 (second place, 2015)
Daniel J. Klein ’11, (first place, 2011)
