08.21.25 — Professor Sonia E. Rolland has been selected to serve on the Annual Meeting Committee of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), bringing her extensive expertise in international economic law and development to help shape one of the field’s most significant gatherings.

ASIL fosters the study of international law and promotes the establishment and maintenance of international relations on the basis of law and justice. The organization’s annual meeting gathers thousands of academics, practitioners and government lawyers from around the world in Washington, DC. The program theme for the April 2026 annual meeting is “Advancing and Defending the Rule of Law.”

“Whether we are talking about trade, climate change, human rights or war, we are at a critical time to think constructively about the rule of law. The Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law is an essential part of that conversation and will bring a range of voices to the table,” said Rolland, author of  Research Handbook on Trade Law and Development (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2025), Emerging Powers in International Economic Law — Cooperation, Competition and Transformation (with David M. Trubek) (Cambridge University Press, 2019), and Development at the WTO (Oxford University Press; hardbound 2012, paperback 2013). Rolland’s research and writing focus on public international law, international economic law and development, international environmental law and energy regulation. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of International Economic Law, Harvard International Law Journal, Georgetown Immigration Law Journal, Global Community Yearbook and the European Journal of International Law, among others.

This appointment builds on Rolland’s longstanding commitment to ASIL. She was elected to serve a three-year term on ASIL’s executive council in 2020 and previously served as editor of ASIL Insights. She has also served as co-chair of the International Economic Law Interest Group and in other leadership positions within the organization.
