New Student Loan Debt Relief Plan

Dear Northeastern Law Community,

On Wednesday, August 24, President Biden announced the Student Loan Debt Relief Plan. If you borrowed a federal loan at any point during your undergraduate or law school career you may qualify for this program. The relief includes current students and borrowers who have federally held undergraduate, graduate and Parent PLUS loans where the first disbursement was on or before June 30, 2022. Loans disbursed by June 30, 2022, are eligible, as opposed to “loan originated,” as has been reported in the press.

Details about this program are being developed by the Biden Administration and the U.S. Department of Education. Below is the link to the Federal Student Aid website, which provides the current available information. Along with loan forgiveness, the Biden Administration has extended the student loan repayment pause. Payments will resume 60 days after the Department is permitted to implement the program or pending litigation is resolved, which will give the Supreme Court an opportunity to resolve the case during its current Term. If the program has not been implemented and the litigation has not been resolved by June 30, 2023 – payments will resume 60 days after that.

Please contact your Federal Loan Servicer as soon as possible to review your options and next steps to process your loan debt cancellation. You will work with your Federal Loan Servicer and not Northeastern University during this process.
