Join for a presentation by Dr. Amaya Alvez Marin, professor of law at University of Concepción in Chile, focused on the Chilean constituent process and her work to replace Chile’s Pinochet-era constitution with one incorporating robust human rights protections. Jackie Dugard, senior lecturer at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Department of Political Science at Columbia University, will lead a conversation after the lecture.

Dr. Amaya Alvez Marin is a professor of law at the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences, University of Concepción, in Concepción, Chile, and a member of Northeastern Law’s International Social and Economic Rights Project (iSERP). She holds LLB, LLM and PhD degrees in law. Her scholarship focuses on constitutional and international law, and social, economic and cultural rights. During 2021-2002, Alvez Marin was an elected member of the Constituent Assembly and played a leading role in drafting a new constitution for Chile.

Jackie Dugard is a senior lecturer at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. She taught for many years at the Wits School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and continues there as a visiting professor. Dugard trained and earned advanced degrees in both law and the social sciences. Her activism, research and extensive publications focus on power and exclusion across a wide range of fields — socio-economic rights, especially rights to housing, land and water; gender-based violence; property law; access to justice; and the role of law and courts in social change, protest and social movements.
