From Jade Trees to Justice: Celebrating Professor Margaret Woo’s Retirement

Professor Margaret Y.K. Woo has left an indelible mark on Northeastern University School of Law over her distinguished career, earning recognition as one of the foremost experts on both the Anglo-American and Chinese socialist legal systems. Her scholarly reach has always extended beyond the classroom, from landmark books on Chinese civil justice and Fulbright-sponsored comparative law seminars in Florence, to her forthcoming memoir, The City of Jade Trees, an eloquent chronicle of four generations of her family whose lives intertwine with pivotal moments in U.S. immigration and Chinese American history.

A teacher of remarkable dedication, Professor Woo brought the same depth of humanity to her students in Civil Procedure, Administrative Law and Comparative Law that she brings to the page — helping them see the law not as abstract doctrine, but as a living force in real people’s lives. As she steps into emerita status, she will remain research active as a senior scholar with the law school’s Center for Global Law and Justice. She is also working on her next book, The Evolving State of American Procedural Exceptionalism, with Scott Dodson of UC San Francisco, which will be published by Elgars in 2027.
