Professor Martha Davis’ Co-authored, Pathbreaking Human Rights Advocacy in the United States Third Edition Now Available
3.28.23 — Today, West Academic published the third edition of Human Rights Advocacy in the United States, the only law school casebook focused on human rights advocacy in the United States.
“We hope that this will be an important resource for students and teachers looking to engage with the full scope of human rights tools available to US advocates,” said Professor Martha Davis, a faculty co-director of Northeastern Law’s Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy and the author or editor of several books on human rights, including, Bringing Human Rights Home, a three-volume work chronicling the U.S. human rights movement.
Davis, along with co-authors Johanna Kalb (University of Idaho College of Law), Risa Kaufman (NYU) and Rachel López (Drexel Kline School of Law), illuminate a range of both emerging challenges and persistent theoretical and doctrinal issues while equipping students to thoughtfully engage human rights law and strategies in their own practice of law. Readings and case studies expose students to the history, tactics, and critiques of the US human rights movement as well as the legal and practical challenges of human rights implementation in the United States. Skills exercises introduce practice-oriented approaches to integrating human rights in US based advocacy, including through engagement with international treaty bodies, regional mechanisms, US courts and policymakers. Additionally, the appendices provide the text of relevant human rights treaties.
