Pro Bono Opportunities

Public interest work is at the heart of a Northeastern Law education, and CPIAC connects students to a wide range of ways to put that commitment into action. Students participate through the law school’s Centers of Excellence, NuLawLab, clinics and a variety of special individual and group projects.

Engage Through the Centers of Excellence

Each of the law school’s five Centers of Excellence offers students opportunities to work alongside faculty on real-world public interest issues. For example, students working with Professor Sharmila Murthy, CPIAC’s faculty co-director, recently drafted and submitted formal comments to the Environmental Protection Agency opposing a proposed rollback of greenhouse gas vehicle standards — engaging directly in the federal rulemaking process and joining more than 350,000 other commenters shaping the administrative record.

Learn Through Immersive Experiences

CPIAC also supports powerful experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Recently, a group of Northeastern Law students joined a judge-led civil rights immersion trip through the Deep South, visiting sites such as the Southern Center for Human Rights, the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Sites in Montgomery and the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, and hearing firsthand from figures including the legendary Bryan Stevenson and civil rights survivor Sarah Collins Rudolph.

CPIAC also recently joined with the Immigrant Justice Clinic to partner with Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) and host an immigration relief screening clinic for community members in the Greater Boston area. More than 60 volunteers — including GBLS advocates and Northeastern Law students, staff and faculty — provided immigration legal advice to more than 45 clients. The clinic provided much-needed support to individuals and families navigating a challenging and overwhelmed immigration

Get Involved with the National Lawyers Guild

Students can also deepen their public interest engagement by getting involved with the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, which offers opportunities to connect with practitioners and organizers committed to using the law in the service of social justice.
